1 - Working and Learning

Lots of people with a learning disability want a job, just like anyone else. Having a job lets you earn money so that you can have more choice and control over your life. You can make new friends too.

To get a job you will probably need some training. We have written a plan to make sure that people with learning disabilities have a better chance of getting a job and the training they need.

There are people who can help you to find a job or training. Click on the links below to find out more.

starOn 24th June 2009 the Government said it wants lots more people with learning disabilities to have real jobs.

They want the jobs to be at least 16 hours per week

They have written a plan to make that happen.

The plan is called ‘Valuing employment now - real jobs for people with learning disabilities'.

To see the plan click here.

You can see some films at this link as well.

We will put an easier to read copy of the report on this website when the Government has written it.

2 - Leisure clubs and having fun

Everyone likes to have fun. But it isn’t always easy for people with disabilities. Nowadays anyone who runs somewhere like a leisure centre or a club has to make sure disabled people can use it. Here are some places for people with learning disabilities to have fun in Medway.

The list is under construction. The places below welcome disabled people and try to help them. There may be others you know about – click ‘Contact us’ to tell us about them and we’ll add them to the list!

3 - Transport and Getting Around

Transport

The “Valuing Medway People” Partnership Board has been told that transport for people with a learning disability to get around Medway is not good enough.

chatham bus

The White Paper “Valuing People” Says:

"Access to transport is essential to enable people with learning disabilities to lead full and purposeful lives. However, they currently face many obstacles using public or private transport. Transport staff and operators may not understand their needs and people may lack the necessary support and training to become independent travellers"

The “Valuing Medway People” Partnership Board has set up a transport group looking at all the issues.

Some good work has already happened:

This is not enough.

The group is writing a brochure about travelling around Medway for people with a learning disability. They want to have an event to tell people about transport in May 2006 where they can give out the brochure.

People from the transport planning team have been to the forum for people with learning disabilities to ask how things can be made better in the short and long term.

Jason Terry leads this group.
