Transport

The “Valuing Medway People” Partnership Board has been told that transport for people with a learning disability to get around Medway is not good enough.

                     transport

The White Paper “Valuing People” Says:

"Access to transport is essential to enable people with learning disabilities to lead full and purposeful lives. However, they currently face many obstacles using public or private transport. Transport staff and operators may not understand their needs and people may lack the necessary support and training to become independent travellers"

The “Valuing Medway People” Partnership Board has set up a transport group looking at all the issues.

Some good work has already happened:

  • CCTV cameras in bus shelters to help stop bullying.
  • Buses easier to get on and off.
  • Responsibilities about the correct change for buses have been discussed.

This is not enough.

The group is writing a brochure about travelling around Medway for people with a learning disability. They want to have an event to tell people about transport in May 2006 where they can give out the brochure.

People from the transport planning team have been to the forum for people with learning disabilities to ask how things can be made better in the short and long term.

Jason leads this group.
