Housing
Housing and Support
Valuing People wants people with learning disabilities have more choice and control over:
- where they live
- who they live with
- how they are supported.
They have written 3 booklets about Choice Based Letting.

A place to live
A Plan for 2004 to 2009
- We have made a Plan for people with a learning disability
- People with a learning disability, their families and carers helped us make the Plan
- We want to give people a choice about where they live and how they live
- The Plan says how we can offer support
- We think that most people will want to live independently, helped by a support plan
- We call this Supported Living
Our Plan says that:
- People who choose to live locally should be helped to do that
- People with a learning disability will help us plan housing and support
- A Housing Forum will help people get housing and support services
- We will plan for older people with learning disabilities who live with older carers
- More people will be able to choose to live in their own ordinary house
- Not so many people will live in residential care
Choice means being able to choose:
- Where to live
- Who to live with
- What support is given
Types of places to live could include:
- Living alone a rented house or flat
- Owning a house or flat
- Shared renting with a friend or partner
- Sub letting to a friend or helper
- Living in sheltered housing
Types of support could include:
- From having from 1 to 2 hours weekly to intensive 24 hours daily
- Personal care and other support
- Nursing and specialist health care
Some people could use the Adult Placement scheme run by the Council. They live with an ordinary family who help with their care and other support they need. You can find out more about Adult Placement from your Care Manager.
There is another way to get your own home called Medway HomeChoice. This is intended to give people more choice over where they live. You can find out more about HomeChoice by clicking here.![]()
